Standard Rules
Basic Rules Overview
Pickleball is played either as doubles (two players per team) or singles; doubles is most common. The same size playing area and rules are used for both singles and doubles.
The Serve
• The server’s arm must be moving in an upward arc when the ball is struck.
• Paddle contact with the ball must not be made above the waist level.
• The head of the paddle must not be above the wrist at contact.
• Foot Follow-through: At the time the ball is struck, the server’s feet may not touch the court. You may follow through into the court area only after striking the ball. If your foot is over the line before the ball is struck, it is a fault and the turn is over.
• The serve is made diagonally crosscourt and must land within the confines of the opposite diagonal court.
Service Sequence
• Both players on the serving doubles team have the opportunity to serve until they commit a fault.
• The first serve of each team is made from the right-hand court.
• If a point is scored, the server switches sides and initiates the next serve from the left-hand court.
Scoring
• Pickleball scoring uses a 3-number system for doubles (e.g., 4-2-1): your team's score, the opposing team's score, and your server number (1 or 2)
• Points are scored only by the serving team.
• Games are normally played to 11 points, win by 2.
• Tournament games may be to 15 or 21, win by 2.
• When the serving team’s score is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10), the player who was the first server in the game for that team will be in the right/even court when serving or receiving; when odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) that player will be in the left/odd court when serving or receiving.
Two-Bounce Rule
• When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces.
• After the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, both teams may either volley the ball (hit the ball before it bounces) or play it off a bounce (ground stroke).
• The two-bounce rule eliminates the serve and volley advantage and extends rallies.
Line Calls
• A ball contacting any part of any line, except the non-volley zone line on a serve, is considered “in.”
• A serve contacting the non-volley zone line is short and a fault.
Non-Volley Zone or Kitchen
• The non-volley zone is the court area within 7 feet on both sides of the net.
• Volleying is prohibited within the non-volley zone. This rule prevents players from executing smashes from a position within the zone.
• It is a fault if, when volleying a ball, the player steps on the non-volley zone, including the line and/or when the player’s momentum causes them or anything they are wearing or carrying to touch the non-volley zone including the associated lines.
• It is a fault if, after volleying, a player is carried by momentum into or touches the non-volley zone, even if the volleyed ball is declared dead before this happens.
• A player may legally be in the non-volley zone any time other than when volleying a ball.
• The non-volley zone is commonly referred to as “the kitchen.”
Faults
• A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation.
• A fault by the receiving team results in a point for the serving team.
• A fault by the serving team results in the server’s loss of serve or side out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play for more than one club?
Absolutely! At the heart of pickleball is the community, and we know how incredibly positive social play is for your health and wellbeing. We would never want to stand in the way of that. By playing at different clubs, you’ll meet new people and sharpen your skills against a wider variety of players.
Just keep one thing in mind if you decide to "put the paddle to the metal" in competitive leagues: you can generally only represent one club per league season. It could get a little awkward if you found yourself having to play against yourself in a league fixture! Whoops!
I don't live in Pontypool, is this a problem?
I've never played, can I join in the fun?
Absolutely! In fact, having no previous experience just means you don't have any bad habits to break!
As a new club, we are incredibly excited to welcome beginners. Come meet the gang, learn the ropes, and discover why this sport is growing so fast. Everyone is welcome, no matter your starting skill level.
I can't play every day because of other commitments—is that a problem?
Can children play?
Because the club is in its early development stages, we don't currently offer specific sessions or coaching for children. Ensuring the safety and proper safeguarding of young people is incredibly important to us, so establishing a dedicated junior section is something we plan to look into once the club is fully established.
To make this happen, we will need qualified volunteers and a solid safeguarding framework in place. If you'd like to help us get a youth programme off the ground, please visit our Contact Us page to express your interest. For the time being, our sessions are open exclusively to adults (ages 18 and over).
Can I play against whoever I want?
During our dedicated Ladder Sessions, unfortunately not. To keep things fair and competitive, the ladder system automatically pairs you with players of a similar or slightly higher skill level. This structure encourages consistent challenges on the court, helping you test your limits and steadily improve your game. It also ensures that everyone gets high-quality matches and that our court time is utilized as effectively as possible for the whole club.
However, we love social, relaxed play just as much as competitive matches! While our current focus is on the ladder league, we hope to host Open Sessions in the future where you can mix, match, and play against whoever you like just for fun, without the scores affecting your online club rating.
What if I'm simply not good enough to play?
There is no such thing as "not good enough" at Pontypool Pickle—we've completely got you covered!
To help build your confidence, we use a ladder system. This ensures you are always paired with and playing against people of a similar skill level. Here is how it works:
A Welcoming Start: If you are new to the club, you will automatically start with a base score of 1200.
No Pressure: This starting score places you comfortably in our introductory rankings so you won't ever feel overwhelmed on court.
Find Your Groove: The more games you play, the more accurate your rating becomes. As you win games and your confidence grows, you will "climb the ladder" to play on higher courts!
How does the rating system work?
We use a dynamic rating system based on the traditional Elo method (similar to how global DUPR ratings operate) to ensure you are always playing against people of a similar skill level.
Your Starting Block: When you create your account, you'll self-select your starting level based on your background or existing 4DR/DUPR rating (ranging from 1000 for beginners up to 1800 for Elite players). This ensures you land on the right court from day one.
The Provisional Period: Your first 10 matches are "provisional." During this time, the system applies a boosted multiplier to your points so it can quickly find your natural level on the ladder.
Every Point Counts: Once settled, your rating shifts after every match. Winning by a wide margin earns you more points than scraping a close 11-9 win. The same applies to losses.
The Underdog Advantage: Beating a higher-rated player gives your ranking a massive boost! Flip side? If you lose to a heavily favoured, higher-ranked player, your score barely takes a hit.
Why does it say "Decaying" below certain players' ratings and what does it mean?
If you see "Decay" next to a player's name on the leaderboard, it just means they've been away from the courts for a little while! Our leaderboard is dynamic and designed to reflect current, active skill. To stop inactive players from permanently holding top spots without playing, we use a "decay" system.
If someone takes an extended break from the club, their ranking points will gradually drop until they return and play a match. Everyone gets a 30-day grace period of inactivity. A player's points will only start to drop—and the "Decay" tag will only appear—if they haven't played a match at the club for more than 30 consecutive days.
The Inactivity Scale:
- • Week 1 of decay: -5 points
- • Week 2 of decay: -10 points
- • Week 3 of decay: -15 points
- • Week 4 of decay: -20 points
There are two safety nets in place to protect everyone's hard-earned scores:
1. The Absence Cap: The maximum total loss for any single period of absence is capped at 50 points. Once a player has lost 50 points, their score freezes.
2. The Floor Limit: Decay will never drop a rating below 1200 points. If a player's score is already at or near 1200 when they go inactive, the decay stops automatically.
Playing just a single match instantly removes the "Decay" tag, stops the point drops, and resets the clock! However, any points lost during the absence are gone—they will need to win matches to climb back up. If they return and then go inactive again in the future, the 30-day clock restarts from zero.
If a player is inactive for 100 consecutive days, their profile will be automatically hidden from the active leaderboard to keep the standings fresh and clean for our regulars. Their points remain safely frozen, and their name will instantly reappear on the ladder as soon as they come back and play their first match.
Do you have a downloadable app?
Not quite yet! The club is still in its foundation stages, but launching a dedicated mobile app is definitely an exciting milestone we are striving toward for the future.
In the meantime, our website is fully optimized for mobile devices. You can easily view our schedule, check player rankings, and secure your spot on the courts directly from your phone's web browser!
